One of my goals for the new school year is to be a more reflective teacher and to write a blog post daily. I decided to take this scary step (scary because "ain't nobody got time for that!") in July when I attended the Living Proof Live conference with Beth Moore. In fact, it was pretty clear that it would be my next step in my professional and personal growth. But the school year got started so quickly and I let the busy-ness of life distract me. So I am grateful for the challenge issued for the month of September by @teachthought http://www.teachthought.com/teaching/reflective-teaching-30-day-blogging-challenge-teachers/
No excuses.
Daily blog post starts now!
My goal is to write a daily blog post for the month of September.
My classroom goal is to launch my class at the end of the hour by sending them off with something more meaningful than "whoops! There's the bell!" I want to be more intentional than that. So I have been collecting inspiring quotes, sayings, stories, and quips that I can use at the end of class to launch them out into the world. Part of bell-to-bell teaching is giving students the opportunity for closure, to organize their belongings as well as their thoughts and ideas as we wrap up class for the day. I am much more task-oriented than time-oriented, so this is a big challenge for me, but it's important enough that I have announced my goal out loud to my colleagues and in writing for my administrators... And now on my blog for everyone else to see!
Finally, I have one more BHAG (big hairy audacious goal) to share, and it's a doozie! This year my goal is for every single AP Chem student to score a 3 or higher on the AP Chem exam in May of 2015. My pass rate has been hovering around 50-60% and that's been ok. But I'm never going back to ok. Even though it's not entirely up to me, I am going to do what it takes to make it happen! Students, don't make me show up at your house, cuz I will! I give up Saturdays to study with my ap chem kids, but it's time to ramp it up. No one will fall through the cracks. And to my students, if you read this, don't even think about diving into the cracks because I will come after you and drag you back out again!
No excuses.
